It seemed like no matter how much I worked out, I couldn’t get rid of the last 20 pounds of “spare tire” I had around my middle. My wife and I are Ironman athletes, training up to three hours per day. Even with the intense workouts, the extra pounds wouldn’t budge. It wasn’t until my wife encouraged me to join her for a nutrition counseling appointment at Nutritional Weight & Wellness that I started to see the weight fall off and noticed other health improvements as well.
At the first appointment with Brenna, it was an eye-opener when she pointed out some of my food addictions. I never thought about it that way, but it made sense when she explained it. I was really bothered that I could have an unhealthy—addictive—relationship with certain foods I loved like soda pop, pizza and pasta. After that first meeting, I gave up soda cold turkey and haven’t had one in more than six months. Soda was something that I really enjoyed, especially after a hard workout. But Brenna taught me to reach for protein to recover after a workout instead of soda.
So far I’ve lost 15 pounds. Almost all of my “spare tire” is gone! I’ve also had improvements in my digestion. I don’t burp all the time like I used to and I’m not bloated and gassy. My heartburn is gone, and I notice that my meals settle better in my stomach. I now eat five times a day to keep my engine running. I have more energy that has resulted in longer and more intense training workouts that I can stick with. I’ve also noticed how much better I am at handling stress. As a middle school teacher, my patience gets put to the test so it’s been a nice benefit.
Brenna gave my wife and me meal and snack ideas that were geared specifically toward endurance athletes. The meal suggestions have been helpful, especially in preparing for our next Ironman competition in November. I know we will be better prepared at this next event than we have in the past.
I’m joyful to see the changes that my wife Jamey has experienced along with my own. I’ve fully embraced my new healthy eating lifestyle!
